De beiaard ontstond rond 1500 in de Lage Landen en is één van de meest originele realisaties uit de muziekgeschiedenis van deze regio. Klokkenmuziek was een luxeproduct dat zich kon ontwikkelen op de voedingsbodem van een competitieve stadscultuur en een geavanceerde technologische kennis, onder meer in de textielindustrie en de molenbouw. Verrassend genoeg overheerst in de recente geschiedschrijving een onnauwkeurig beeld over dit onderwerp, waarrond ook heel wat mythes bestaan. Dit boek brengt daarentegen de eerste wetenschappelijke biografie van de vroege beiaard en tekent een overtuigend beeld van de complexe ontwikkelingslijn die langs verschillende middeleeuwse klokgebruiken heeft geleid tot de beiaard. Een van de voorlopers van het beiaardspel is de praktijk van het beieren. Beieraars bespeelden zware luidklokken door de klepels naar de klokwanden te drijven met touwen. Vanaf 1480 slaagden zij erin met die techniek bestaande melodieën te spelen en ten laatste in 1510 pasten zij hun kunde ook toe op de kleinere klokjes die als automaat de slagen van de uurklok aankondigden. Deze zogenaamde voorslag was ontstaan rond 1375 en kon rond 1460 melodieën ten gehore brengen. Uiteindelijk was rond 1530 het nieuwe muziekinstrument technisch voltooid. Enkel op het vlak van het aantal klokken en hun toonzuiverheid zouden later nog belangrijke evoluties volgen.

The carillon, the world's largest musical instrument, originated in the 16th century when inhabitants of the Low Countries started to produce music on bells in church and city towers. Today, carillon music still fills the soundscape of cities in Belgium and the Netherlands.
